Wildlife Conservation - 10 Nights / 11 Days

DAY 01

Upon arrival transfer to Colombo and explore the city in the evening.

DAY 02, 03

Partake in a two day hands–on workshop to learn about the basics of wildlife conservation, sustainable development, and participatory community based field research. Things you will learn – how to use a GPS unit to track your travels in the wilderness, introduced to nocturnal life, you will learn how electric fences operate, how they are managed by villagers, learn how to orient yourself in the field plus how to visualize the data on a map. At the Wasgamuwa National Park you will learn how to identify individual elephants to help learn about populations, ranging and behavior. You will help to photograph individual elephants, identify them using various physical features and catalog the photos.

DAY 04, 05, 06

After the workshop drive to Pinnawala and proceed to the Millennium Elephant Foundation where you will spend the next two and a half days assisting the orphaned elephants. Meet up with the European volunteers and learn how they help out the elephants and learn the ropes about Elephant conservation from them.

DAY 07, 08, 09

Next day morning drive to the West coastal town of Kosgoda and proceed to the Turtle Hatchery. Help the locals with their daily procedures and go out in the night to collect the Turtle eggs off the beach. Then at dusk, let the baby turtles who’re big enough to be set free, into the Indian Ocean.

DAY 10

Drive to Negombo and relax the rest of the day before departure.
